Antarctica Day 3

Ice, penguins and whales and that's just the passengers!

overcast 4 °C

Here we are on Day 3 of our fabulous Antarctic Cruise on the beautiful Star Princess. Today we have continued to have perfect weather and some passengers have seen whales. The bridge has just announced a pod of Humpbacks passing by our Starboard Side in the distance. We have just been sitting in the Atrium while I blog. One day to go then its on to Cape Horn, Ushaia and Punta Arenas and the finish of the cruise in about 8 days at Valparaiso.

What a fantastic day so far. Star Princess is rock steady but the weather Gods are very kind to all who sail on Star so far.

Elephant Island, South Shetland Islands

Wonders of Antarctica.

sunny -4 °C

Woke early this morning and soon came in sight of Elephant island - the site of the famous Shackleton Expedition which was grounded in this terrible but beautiful place in 1916 after the Endurance was caught in the ice. We are sailing past porpoising penguins and Glaciers and have seen 2 Antarctic Minke Whales already this morning. It is bitterly cold out on the deck but we can sit in relative comfort on our balcony and enjoy the scenery in our 5-6 layers of clothing and blankets. This is just the beginnig of 4 days of cruising this wild and wonderful place. Tomorrow we sail the Antarctic peninsular itself. Weather is glorious and the Drake Passage mercifully held up any really nasty seas. Will copy this to the blog and add photos later today. As I write this entry I look to my rightand in the window of the Internet Lounge I can see the glacier covered islands. Have taken dozens of Photos and Video and will upload these later today.

Port Stanley Falkland Islands

Penguins Galore

IMG_2176.jpgWhat a wonderful day. After a shake rattle and roll ride for 2 1/2 hours each way that made Lethal Weapon and Space mountain seem tame we arrived at Volunteer point. We were surrounded by thousands of squealing squwarking comenings (penguins). We had many close encounters of the feathered kind with King penguins Gentoo and Jackass penguins. Let me tell something to Jou Joshua! They were fantastic and did not dance or talk or sing but they were wonderful to see. Not at all frightened of us. We were able to get really close to 4 week old fluffy chicks and watch as the mothers groomed and fed them. Tonight we froze at the the Movie Under The Stars with our blankies popcorn and polar fleece jackets. Saw the Duchess. Celina took over 2 hundred photos of penguins. Wish we could share them with you but Internet too slow.IMG_2111.jpg
